Sometime early this morning a thief or thieves went around the neighborhood breaking into people’s cars. They dropped a camera lens they had removed from my car and I found it today out in the grass behind the house. Should I take it to the police to see if they can get fingerprints off it, or would that be stupid?
Oddly, the camera lens was the ONLY thing in my car of any value, and the numbnuts dropped it and left it behind. Everything that was taken was in a backpack that I have stuffed behind the driver’s seat. They didn’t touch anything else in the car. At first I wasn’t planning on reporting anything because I had left the window rolled down last night and thought it was probably just a random event, maybe a kid grabbing something for the thrill of it. But when I got back from work I went around asking if anybody had seen anything, and found out several people’s cars were broken into.
So I don’t know, I have the lens (which was still in its old fashioned leather case) which I know was in my car last night, and I know was in the grass this morning, so reasonably I can assume somebody had to have picked it up with their hand at some point in between. So if I show up at the PD with this item, would they look at me like I’m crazy? Or could it possibly help somebody?

I would certainly hope that they’d be very interested in seeing that. Problem is, of course, that they’ll take it from you...

Worth a shot, if you’re willing to live without your lens for a while.
Worst they can say is no thanks.
Also you’re in Europe, right? So they won’t try to deport you for being brown and helpful.

Texas is kind of like the Europe of the U.S.

I’d call them and ask. Years ago I found a steak knife stuck in the sidewall of my tire one morning. My local PD came out, took a report, and took the knife back for figer printing. Nothing ever came of it, but I appreciated the effort. Some PDs won’t even take a report for something like that.

If the thieves just hit your car I would say no the police probably wouldn’t bother, but if there is a rash of robberies like you said they probably want to get it solved. Chances are these guys have hit other neighborhoods too and APD is getting a lot of complaints.

Were the cars broken into, or were they unlocked? We’ve had a spate of thieves going around and pulling on car handles to see which ones are unlocked. I’ve had my van rifled twice because I didn’t lock it. One time they took my iPod, and another the dipshits took the face plate to my radio. Now I make a point of beeping both cars with the remote when I go to bed.

Other cars were broken into. Mine was just me being dumb and leaving the window down.

It doesn’t hurt to call. Good thing you had the window down, so that they didn’t have to break it.
It’s probably some junkie looking for drug money. One of the big things they target is change left in your console, as well as GPS units, or other things they can sell quickly. It’s happened to me a few times living in the city. Get used to leaving nothing exposed in your car that looks tempting.
